During the first weekend of September I did some canvassing work at Hempstalk for Brightside Community Foundation, the dispensary I work for. As I was handing out fliers a fellow co-worker and I stumbled upon Empower‘s vendor booth and I was automatically interested in the product. The smooth, black label drew me in and I was impressed with the professional marketing (which seems hard to come by in the cannabis industry). Empower Triple Infused Cannabis Oil is a blend of essential oils used to treat topical pain. The simple yet direct slogan “put it where it hurts” pretty much sums up this product.

Sold in two sizes (.3 oz and 1 oz), Empower is dispensed through a roller-ball bottle that is applied directly on the skin. I know people may be hesitant to use oil on themselves, but this product is quickly absorbed through the skin and doesn’t leave a greasy residue. When I asked Trista Okel (the owner of Empower) what this oil can be used on, she quickly rattled off an exhaustive list. From arthritis and tendonitis, to sprains and unbroken burns. It also provides relief for those suffering from chronic pain due to issues like fibromyalgia. This non-psychoactive topical oil helps people cope with day to day pain providing effective relief for those looking for other options rather than just popping a pill. Literally apply this oil externally where ever you experience pain (do not use it on broken skin).

As the cannabis industry continues to grow and gain legitimacy, the issue of women in relation to the the marijuana community is still a hot-button topic. Not only does this product provide relief for its users, but it’s essential to note that this company was also started by a female marijuana activist. As women gain traction within the cannabis industry, it is important we highlight women like Trista Okel who are making a difference by changing the perception of what it means to be a woman working within the marijuana community. We do not solely function as sexualized objects used to attract business. There are legitimate business women looking to be taken seriously and make a difference in the world.

Brightside is one of the few dispensaries in Portland that now carries Empower Triple- Infused Cannabis Oil. Not only does this product give our patients more non- psychoactive options for pain management, but also supports the future of women and the roles they play within the cannabis industry. Empower is actually an acronym for “Ending Marijuana Prohibition by Organizing Women to Enact Reform”. I cannot stress the value of supporting up-and-coming innovators not only looking to better their business, but also positively contribute to society through the means of social justice. In Empower’s case, that would be improving the status and perception of women in a growing industry one bottle at a time.
